The composition leads the eye from the outdoor courtyard on the far left through the open wooden doorway and into the kitchen interior. Woman Preparing Masa
The principal figure is shown standing behind a dark stone metate, pressing and working masa with a cylindrical stone mano. Her traditional white blouse is decorated with red and green floral embroidery around the neckline, while a red sash defines the waist.
Her long dark braid falls over one shoulder and is accented with a large red ribbon. The figure introduces a human narrative to the mural and connects the decorative kitchen setting with the tradition of handmade tortilla preparation.
Wood-Fired Stove and Comal
On the left, a built-in brick stove contains burning firewood beneath a large black comal. Bright orange and yellow flames rise from the firebox, creating strong visual contrast with the surrounding red brick and white ceramic tile accents.
Several tortillas cook directly on the comal, emphasizing the culinary process shown throughout the mural. Blue floral motifs painted on the white stove tiles introduce classic Mexican ceramic decoration into the architectural structure.
Metate and Tortilla Preparation
The central worktable is devoted to the tortilla-making process. Fresh masa is spread across the volcanic-stone metate, while nearby bowls contain additional dough and liquid. The scene visually connects grinding and preparation with cooking on the comal and the finished tortilla stack displayed at the far right.
This sequence gives the mural a strong narrative quality, showing several stages of traditional food preparation within a single ceramic composition.
Finished Tortillas
A large woven basket in the lower right holds a tall stack of finished tortillas. The basket is lined with a white cloth decorated with red and green floral embroidery, visually echoing the woman’s blouse and reinforcing the traditional textile details throughout the mural.
Pottery and Decorative Ceramics
The kitchen contains a wide variety of hand-painted and rustic ceramic pieces. Terracotta pots and jars are decorated with white and green floral motifs, while green-and-cream pitchers introduce contrasting color along the counter.
Three decorative plates displayed on the upper shelf feature blue, red, green, and white floral designs, connecting the rustic kitchen setting with Mexican ceramic decorative traditions.
Hanging Peppers, Garlic, and Herbs
Bundles of dried red chile peppers and white garlic hang from the wall near the upper right, creating strong vertical accents against the golden-yellow background. A trailing green plant softens the nearby shelves and adds natural color to the kitchen interior.
Courtyard and Outdoor Background
The open left side of the mural reveals a sunlit courtyard with prickly pear cactus, tall columnar cactus, flowering plants, stone walls, clay pots, and a bright blue sky. This outdoor view creates depth and visually connects the kitchen with a warm Mexican hacienda environment.
The open wooden door and terracotta flooring guide the eye from the courtyard into the interior kitchen, giving the mural the impression of a larger architectural space.

Production Technique
The complete kitchen composition is divided across 35 individual 4 × 4 inch ceramic tiles. Each tile carries a planned section of the woman, metate, stove, tortillas, pottery, architectural details, courtyard, or surrounding accessories. When assembled in the correct 7 tiles wide × 5 tiles high layout, the tiles form one continuous horizontal mural.
Ceramic pigments and glazes are applied by hand before kiln firing, producing vivid, durable color and a glossy surface. Strong outlines help define clothing, food, pottery, firewood, cookware, architectural forms, and vegetation across the visible tile joints.
Slight variations in brushwork, glaze intensity, shading, color tone, and tile alignment are natural characteristics of handcrafted ceramic production and contribute to the individuality of each mural.
Artisanal Production in Mexico
This mural is created by Mexican artisans using traditional decorative ceramic painting techniques. The kitchen scene is carefully planned across the complete tile grid so that the woman, metate, stove, pottery, shelves, courtyard, and culinary details align correctly once installed.
The mural celebrates everyday Mexican traditions by turning the preparation of tortillas, the use of a metate and comal, and the warmth of a rustic family kitchen into a lasting work of ceramic art.
Artisan Note
